It is getting close to distribution payout time for a number of S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) shares. Investors need to know about the ex-dividend date to make sure they don't miss out.

The day the payout hits the bank account is important, but the ex-dividend date is also essential to know. Investors need to own shares before the ex-dividend date to gain entitlement to the upcoming payment. Any investors that buy on the ex-dividend date miss out.

Many of the businesses that I'm going to mention are ASX 200 property trusts that pay every three months.
