After starting the day off on the wrong foot, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) tumbled even further this afternoon to close the day 1.48% lower at 7,102.8 points.
The apparent driver of its tumble was the latest Aussie inflation figures. The consumer price index (CPI) rose 6.8% over the 12 months to April, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Leading the market's losses on Wednesday was the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ). It plunged 2.5% amid falling oil prices.
Brent crude oil dropped 4.6% to US$73.54 a barrel overnight while US Nymex oil dumped 4.4% to reach US$69.46 a barrel.
Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) fell 2.2% and the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) plunged 2%.
The latter was driven lower by the Bank of Queensland Ltd (ASX: BOQ) share price. It fell 5.4% after the bank revealed its entered enforceable undertakings with regulators.
Finally, the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) led the market today, gaining 0.01%, the only sector to finish in the green.
So, with all that in mind, let's dive into today's top-performing ASX 200 shares.
