The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) recovered some of this week's losses on Thursday, rising 0.52% to close at 7,236.8 points.
It came after US President Joe Biden expressed confidence in finding a deal that would help the world's largest economy avoid coming face-to-face with its debt ceiling. If that were to happen, it would likely have major ramifications for Australia and ASX investors, as my Fool colleague Sebastian discussed in-depth today.
Leading the market on Thursday was the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XJJ). It rose 2.9%.
Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) climbed 1.2% and the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XJO) jumped 0.9% amid rising oil prices.
Brent crude oil rose 2.7% to US$76.96 a barrel overnight while US Nymex crude oil gained 2.8% to US$72.83 a barrel.
On the other hand, the S&P/ASX 200 Real Estate Index (ASX: XRE) posted the biggest fall, dropping 0.4%.
So, with all that in mind, let's take a look at today's top-performing ASX 200 shares.
