The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) opened Thursday's session with a tumble before regaining most of its losses, closing the day 0.06% lower at 7,193.1 points.
Its slump followed similar falls across the major indices of Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) lost 0.8% overnight, while the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) fell 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) slipped 0.5%.
Their losses came amid the United States (US) Federal Reserve's decision to hike rates in the world's largest economy by 0.25%. The nation's official interest rate now sits in the range of 5% to 5.25%.
Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) tumbled 2.5% after National Australia Bank Ltd (ASX: NAB) disappointed the market with the release of its first-half earnings.
Further, the banking crisis continued in the US, with embattled PacWest Bancorp (NASDAQ: PACW) shares plummeting over 50% in after-hours trade amid reports the bank is considering all its options, even a sale, following the collapse of numerous competitors.
On a positive note, the S&P/ASX 200 Real Estate Index (ASX: XRE) bounced back today, rising 2%.
