The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) looks like its on its way to make 3 out of 3 days on the red so far this Wednesday. At the time of writing, the ASX 200 is down by 0.89% at 7,354 points.
So rather than crying over that spilled milk, let's instead check out the ASX 200 shares that are currently topping the ASX trading volume charts, according to investing.com.
3 most active ASX 200 shares by volume on Wednesday
South32 Ltd (ASX: S32)
Mining giant South32 is our first ASX 200 share to check out today. This diversified resources company has seen a hefty 13.88 million of its shares trade hands on the markets so far this Wednesday.
With no news out of the company itself, we can probably look to the South32 share price for the source of this elevated trading volume. South32 is currently up a healthy 1.74% to $3.50 a share. But that came after an initial pop-then-drop this morning. This volatility is the likely cause of this elevated volume.
Sydney Airport (ASX: SYD)
Our second share to check out today is none other than the ASX 200 infrastructure giant Sydney Airport. This company has seen a chunky 18.72 million of its shares swap owners thus far today. Again, there are no major pieces of news out of Sydney Airport. And the company's share price is presently flat at $8.40 after rising to $8.42 and dropping as low as $8.39 over the course of the trading day so far.
However, the blockbuster takeover offer (priced at $8.75 a share) that the ASX 200 company accepted last week might still be influencing volumes with Sydney Airport today.
Telstra Corporation Ltd (ASX: TLS)
Our final and most traded ASX 200 share today happens to be the telco Telstra. Telstra has had 27.35 million of its shares bought and sold so far this Wednesday. This might have something to do with the solid share price gains the company has seen so far today.
Telstra shares are currently trading at $3.98 each, but reached as high as $4 earlier this morning, just a touch off its 52-week high of $4.05 a share. Together with this telco's ongoing share buybacks, this is probably why Telstra is topping this list so far today.
