With a new decade ahead of us, I think it's a great time to examine your portfolio and try and picture how your shares will look in 2030. Some companies will be exponentially larger, some will be around the same and some might not even exist.
It's no secret which ones you'd want to own.
Picking the next '10-bagger' is very difficult, however. I instead usually focus on companies that are hard not to imagine as larger in ten years' time than today.
So, here are three ASX investments that I think are 'must-buys' in this 2020 year for the coming decade.
CSL Limited (ASX: CSL)
CSL is the largest healthcare company in Australia and a major global player in the vaccines and blood research areas. Of all the industries out there, I consider healthcare as one of the best to invest in. Our population is only getting older and more affluent, which is an elixir of growth for companies catering to this demographic's healthcare needs.
Therefore, I think owning CSL shares is a great investment both now and over the next decade and beyond (despite the CSL share price being at all-time highs).
Washington H. Soul Pattinson and Co. Ltd (ASX: SOL)
'Soul Patts' (as it's more easily known) is not the kind of '10-bagger' that will make you filthy rich overnight. But it is a company that I'm very confident will be around and thriving in a decades' time. That's because Soul Patts invests prudently in long-term assets that pass its management's keen eye. Past winners include TPG Telecom Ltd (ASX: TPM), Brickworks Limited (ASX: BKW) and New Hope Corporation Limited (ASX: NHC).
Soul Patts is also one of the half-handful of ASX companies that have paid a rising dividend every year this century so far. That's a track record I love having in my own portfolio and would recommend to anyone!
BetaShares Nasdaq 100 ETF (ASX: NDQ)
A slightly different investment, this exchange traded fund (ETF) actually holds shares in 100 top US companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange. The Nasdaq typically holds the more 'tech-orientated' companies in the US, and today includes well-known names like Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Tesla and Facebook.
Buying the NDQ ETF means you're buying exposure to all of these top companies (plus 94 others), which I think will prove to be a phenomenal investment over the coming years. These companies are all changing the world in their own way, and the one ETF gives you a slice of the action!
Foolish takeaway
I would love to hold all three of these investments in a 'never-sell' portfolio for the 2020s and I believe all three are 'must-buy' shares for 2020. I think each will serve their shareholders well and prove just as relevant by the time we get to 2030.
