It's official. This morning U.S. online retail giant Amazon confirmed it is to open a 24,000 square metre goods delivery centre in Melbourne's Dandenong South and is recruiting immediately for hundreds of warehouse staff and administrative staff.
"This new fulfilment centre will stock hundreds of thousands of products which will be available for delivery to customers across Australia when we launch our retail offering," said Amazon's Australian boss Robert Bruce. "We will be focusing on offering our Australian customers low prices on a great selection of products and can't wait to get started."
Amazon also confirmed it will bring "thousands" of new jobs to Australia and that its Melbourne operations are "just the start" in an ominous warning for Australia's high-street retailers and supermarket operators like Woolworths Limited (ASX: WOW) or Coles.
No official launch date for its Melbourne online delivery operations has been provided, but around the summer of 2017 looks the time Australia's retailers might start to feel the heat.
