Best and worst stocks on the ASX today

A strong mining sector gain has helped the local bourse close the day near its highs. The S&P/ASX 200 Index (Index: ^AXJO) (ASX: XJO) added 1% for Wednesday with all sectors, except the telecommunication services sector, higher. The gains followed the end of a three-day losing streak on Wall Street and benefited from central bank action in India and Turkey, where intervention occurred to calm fears circulating that emerging economies face a collapse in their currencies.

• Atlas Iron Limited (ASX: AGO) climbed 9.9%% to $1.05
• Ten Network Holdings Ltd (ASX: TEN) gained 9% to 36.5 cents
• Drillsearch Energy Limited (ASX: DLS) added 6.3% to $1.52
• Energy World Corporation Ltd (ASX: EWC) rose 5.6% to 38 cents
• Senex Energy Ltd (ASX: SXY) closed up 5.3% to 70 cents

These stocks were the losers on the day.

• Forge Group Limited (ASX: FGE) lost 8.9% to 82 cents
• JB Hi-Fi Limited (ASX: JBH) dropped 4.9% to $18.25
• Silver Lake Resources Limited (ASX: SLR) closed down 3.3% to 59.5 cents
• Resolute Mining Limited (ASX: RSG) fell 2.8% to 52.5 cents
• Goodman Fielder Ltd (ASX: GFF) slipped 1.5% to 65 cents
