The S&P / ASX 200 Index (Index: ^AXJO) (ASX: XJO) has ended its worst losing streak in 17 months, defying predictions of a seventh down day. The index rose 0.7%, to finish at 5,098.4, despite offshore markets tumbling overnight. The Dow Jones dropped 0.7%, while the S&P 500 lost 0.4%.

- Boart Longyear (ASX: BLY) added 7% to 30.5 cents
- Buru Energy (ASX: BRU) gained 5.7% to $1.48
- NRW Holdings (ASX: NWH) rose 5.6% to $1.235
