The S&P / ASX 200 Index (Index: ^AXJO) (ASX: XJO) has closed flat at 5,433.8, after recovering from an early fall. Sectors were mixed, as might be expected, with health care down 1%, A-REITs (property trusts) losing 0.9%, while metals and mining posted a gain of 0.9%. The Australian dollar continues to rise, now buying 95.1 US cents.

Here are the top five best performing stocks in the index today.

Atlas Iron (ASX: AGO) climbed 7.3% to $1.17
Fortescue Metals Group (ASX: FMG) added 5.6% to $5.84
Oceanagold Corporation (ASX: OGC) closed up 4.9% to $1.925
Mount Gibson Iron (ASX: MGX) rose 4.8% to 98 cents
Lynas Corporation (ASX: LYC) gained 4.3% to 36.5 cents

These stocks were the losers on the day.

Alacer Gold Corp (ASX: AQG) dropped 9.4% to $2.59
Medusa Mining (ASX: MML) slumped 5.9% to $1.92
Decmil Group (ASX: DCG) fell 5.4% to $2.29
St Barbara Mining (ASX: SBM) slipped 4.6% to 41.5 cents
Fairfax Media (ASX: FXJ) lost 4.2% to 57.5 cents
