Brambles (ASX: BXB), which owns the CHEP pooling business has launched technology which results in an 80% drier crate, thanks to state-of-the-art centrifugal dryer technology which the company has installed at CHEP's Scoresby service centre.
One of the first customers to benefit from the newly installed dryer is fresh produce distributor Moraitis. In commenting on the drier crate, National Equipment Controller at Moraitis Mr Ashley Lockett noted that "in our business moisture levels are critical to quality. We are very happy with the results from the new centrifugal crate dryer – it has already improved our ability to transport fresh produce to market in peak condition."
The innovative new dryer is also environmentally friendly and compliments CHEP's HACCP crate wash system. Used together, the wash and dry technology allows CHEP to offer a new level in product protection and quality.
Foolish takeaway
Whether it is cutting edge scientific innovation or improvements in the 'mature' industry of pallets and crates, firms that fail to spend money on research and development and innovate to stay ahead of the competition are destined to fail. Brambles' success at innovating is an important attribute which has enabled the company to maintain its comparative advantage against competitors.
